Good News Clubs

Good News Clubs are back in the Middletown Area School District elementary schools!

Kunkel is on Monday; Reid on Wednesday; and Fink on Thursday. Check with your child’s school to see which date your club will begin or call Child Evangelism Fellowship at 717-652-0372.

The clubs provide fun, games, stories, friendships and more. The clubs meet after school, and there is no charge. They are not sponsored by MASD.

Sacred songs

The public is invited to attend a special presentation by the Bob Jones University Music Ministry Team at Open Door Bible Church, 200 Nissley Drive, Lower Swatara, at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14.

The team will present a program of sacred songs and testimonies. They are touring through Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania this fall.

The BJU group consists of staff and students who come from four states. Come out to enjoy a blessed evening.

Middletown parade

The Kiwanis Club of Middletown will play host to its 65th annual Halloween Parade on Monday, Oct. 15.

The rain date is Oct. 16.

Lower Swatara parade

The Lower Swatara Lions Club will hold its annual Halloween Parade on Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Lions building in Shope Gardens.

Registration will begin at 5 p.m. The parade starts at 6 p.m. sharp.

Prizes will be awarded in all categories and refreshments will be served to all after the parade. Get your little ones in their costumes! Get your groups together and come down for a fun night for all.

There is no rain date.

Leaf collection

Lower Swatara Township shares the leaf collection schedule:

Mondays, Tuesdays: Shope Gardens, Greenwood Hills, Woodridge.

Wednesdays: Bryn Gweld, Green Plains, Jednota Flats Rosedale Areas, Twelve Oaks.

Thursdays, Fridays: Longview Acres, Old Reliance Farms.

Pickup begins on Monday, Oct. 22 and continues through mid-December. Holidays may disrupt the schedule.

Leaves should be curbside. Please do no rake leaves into the street. If there is a storm drain adjacent to your property, please try to keep it cleared.

No limbs, branches, grass clippings, flowers or mulched leaves will be picked up.

Broccoli Casserole

1 pkg. chopped broccoli

1/2 cup uncooked rice

1/2 cup water

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 Tbsp. butter

1/2 onion, thinly sliced

1/2 cup milk

1 can mushroom soup, undiluted

1/4 lb. Velveeta cheese, cubed

Topping, mix together:

1 cup crushed round Ritz crackers

2 Tbsp. melted butter


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a saucepan, cook broccoli in water and salt for 2 minutes. Drain well. Cook rice to package instructions. Melt butter in frying pan over medium heat. Sauté onions until transparent.

In a medium frying pan, heat milk, mushroom soup and cheese. Stir until all ingredients have melted. Add broccoli, rice and onions. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes. Grease medium casserole, pour in mixture, sprinkle with topping. Bake for 25 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
