A car crashed into a fire hydrant at North Race and Linden streets around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, and the driver fled the scene, Middletown police said.

Daniel J. Haylett, 18, of the 900 block of Briarcliff Road, Middletown, was taken into custody on Briarcliff Road and questioned, police said. He was not injured.

Haylett’s late-model Toyota Corolla leveled the hydrant, police said. The car was towed from the scene.

An off-duty police officer told police he heard a loud explosion and saw two people running from the scene of the crash.
