Editor’s note: The following essay by Sara Dintiman, who was a seventh-grader at Middletown Area Middle School last school year, won first place in the Middletown Memorial VFW Post 1620 Patriots Pen contest.

America is the land of the free and the home of the brave, but we would not have had the chance to be free unless someone believed it was possible.

If no one had put faith in our country, we might not have the opportunities we have been given today.

When they wake up in the morning, few people in America would say that they feel afraid. I believe in our government because they keep us safe, and they try to make decisions for the benefit of our country.

Citizens of other countries may not feel as secure in their country as we do as Americans. We have a strong military that not only keeps us safe, but helps protect other countries. We strive, not only for the safety of our country, but also to keep peace in our world.

When you think of America, you might think of freedom or hope. As Americans, we can put our faith in what we believe, and we are given opportunities to make our own choices instead of being forced into things.

We have laws, but our options are not nearly as limited as those in other countries. I believe in America because we have dreams, and we are given the opportunity to make them come true.

In America, each of us has the right to object to what we think is wrong, as a person or as a whole nation. I believe in my country because our leaders gave us the freedom to stand up for what we believe in.

Our country has made sacrifices to achieve what we have. If we were not given the opportunity to speak our minds, we would not have fought, and we would never be where we are today.

America is an amazing country. I believe in America because our government keeps us safe while also giving us our freedom. I believe as an American, I am fortunate enough to live in a country where I have a fair opportunity to achieve my goals and be who I want to be.
