RAINN Day - Sexual Assault Program

Posted

The sexual assault program, presented by the YWCA and sponsored by the Penn State Harrisburg Commission for Women, focuses on defining sexual assault, the laws surrounding sexual assault, the importance of a sexual assault forensic exam (SAFE), and statistics.

85% of sexual assaults are committed by a person the victim knows. It is important to remember that freshman and sophomores are at a greater risk of becoming victims of sexual assault than juniors and seniors. It is important to stress the issues of sexual assault as it is something that affects everyone. We will discuss practices that students can adopt to help reduce their risk of becoming a victim of sexual assault.

The program also describes a SAFE. 81% of on-campus and 84% of off-campus sexual assaults are not reported to police. Having a SAFE does not mean a victim is required to press charges; it is done to help the victim heal from any injuries that occurred during the sexual assault. Victims of sexual assault are often left confused and feeling alone.

The advocates at the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg seek to help eliminate those feelings.
