RAINN Day - Men and Healing

Posted

When we talk about sexual assault, we tend to automatically assume that the victim is female. This is due, in part, to the prevailing cultural image of men as inherently strong, aggressive, assertive, and thus entirely capable of protecting themselves.

In turn, these expected masculine qualities have helped fuel the myth that a real man cannot be sexually victimized. For years now several community groups have come together to help promote social change and to eliminate the barriers that keep men from the help they need. The Boys and Men Healing screening is designed to break through these barriers, which inhibit boys and men from receiving the services they need.

This program consists of the 60 minute documentary “Boys and Men Healing” followed by a 30-60 minute open forum discussion. The program is geared towards at risk communities, including colleges, schools, churches, etc. While we know sexual assault on college campuses is not only an issue for women but for men as well, the resources for men are still limited. That is why the discussion piece is designed to further develop ideas on how the YWCA can better service boys and men in the community, as well as answer any questions that the attendees may have.

Men and Healing is presented by the YWCA and sponsored by the Penn State Harrisburg Commission for Women.
