Owen "Frank" Deitz

Owen Franklin Deitz, 86, of Middletown (and formerly Hummelstown), passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017.

Born on December 5, 1930 in Shenandoah, Virginia, Frank was one of 10 siblings to the late Anna B. Hose, Flossie Heishman and Benjamin F. Deitz.

A veteran of the Marine Corps, Frank received two Purple Hearts during his tour of duty on the front lines in Korea (1952-54). He retired from the PA State Police as an auto technician, following many years as an auto mechanic for Francis for Ford in Harrisburg.

Frank’s life was one of humble service from beginning to end. Whether serving as Scoutmaster, driving for Meals on Wheels or supporting the many activities at the Middletown Church of God, he always had time to share a good tale with young and old alike. His interests in cars and RV cross-country travel gave him lots of opportunity to share his enjoyment of old-fashioned country music and his unique style of “hillbilly wisdom.” He was helpful, kind, generous and fun; he simply enjoyed people.

Known fondly as “Pappy”, Frank was the best grandfather anyone could ask for. We counted on him for the warmest hugs, the best advice and the grandest stories. He was an instigator of mischief, yet was the faithful neighborhood watch. We will miss his jokes, his laughter and his big smile. We will always picture him sporting bright Hawaiian shirts, big Grand Ole Opry belt buckles and snazzy hats. He was the right hand to “Granny’s” left. There is no one like him. We will find comfort knowing that he is looking down on us from Heaven.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Shirley; his children Bonnie Benner and husband Lewis, Ronee, and David and wife Cathy; grandchildren Valerie Graybill and husband Nathan, Heather Thompson and husband George, and Eric Fegley and wife Heather; great-grandchildren Cassidy and Kathryn Graybill, Jordan Smith, and Isabella and Luke Fegley; and siblings Charlotte Henry, Benjamin and wife Donna, Kathryn Coombs, Barbara Jenkins, and Ethel Cooper.

Please join the family for visitation at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2017, at the Middletown First Church of God, 245 West High Street, Middletown. The service will begin at 3 p.m., followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the Middletown First Church of God, 245 West High Street, Middletown, PA 17057.

The family has entrusted the care of the Matinchek Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 260 East Main St., Middletown, PA with the funeral arrangements.
