This is exactly what happens every year. Summer slips by and we don’t get to do the things we hoped and planned to do. Don’t let this happen to you.

What is on your calendar for summer vacation? I love road trips. I don’t mind taking my time to get somewhere. We have a huge country, and it behooves us to get out there and explore. Maybe this isn’t the right time for you, but you can dream! Where would you like to go?

Chicken barbecue

The Middletown Church of God is holding a chicken barbecue on Saturday, June 30.

A delicious meal, including sides, will be available for pickup from 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the kitchen. The church is at 245 W. High St. The kitchen is at the rear of the building.

Tickets are $10. Please order in advance by contacting the office at 717-944- 9608 or via email at mdtcog@comcast.net. It’s a lunchtime to skip cooking!

Whoopie pies

From the Wedding Book Collection

Cream together 1/2 c. shortening and 1 c. sugar. Add 2 eggs. If you would like to double the recipe, add 1 more. Add 1/2 c. sour milk and 1 tsp. of baking soda.

Sift together 2 c. flour; 1/3 c. cocoa; 1/4 tsp. salt; 1/2 tsp. baking powder.

Finally, add 1/2 c. of hot water.

Drop in spoonfuls on greased baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.

Filling:

2 egg whites

2 tsp. vanilla

4 Tbs. flour

3 c. 10x sugar

3 Tsp. milk

3/4 c. Crisco

Whip all ingredients together with mixer until desired consistency.
