Falcons need to "click" to overcome lack of size

ldgirlsbballpic12 4 1q3 webBut that does not mean they can’t win. The goal, as always, is to win a division championship and qualify for the District 3 and state playoffs, according to Coach Bob Heusser.

The Falcons just have to play hard, play as a team, and play defense.

“Every year, when you come into the season, you have high expectations, so it’s a possibilty. They’ve got to click, but we’ve got a chance,” Heusser said. “I don’t think we have an outstanding player, but we have a lot of good players.”

If Heusser isn’t shying away from high expectations, he also isn’t minimizing the challenges they face: The team is “limited by our size,” he said. That means the Falcons will need defense to be a strength, and offense to not be too much of a weakness.

“We’ve got to get some consistency with our offense – we’ve got to find a couple of girls who will score for us,” he said.

The group of 21 varsity and junior varsity players features both experience and youth. Key to the team’s success, Heusser said, will be the play of senior guards Taryn Messick, Maggie Mostoller and Erica Noss and forwards Stacy Roman and Mary Skitka.

“I think our seniors have shown terrific leadership this year,” he said.  “Our seniors have to step up and play well for us.”{jcomments on}
