Arrest made in Elizabethtown bank robbery last December

A Harrisburg man has been arrested on charges he robbed a bank in Elizabethtown in December.

At about 2:20 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, the Elizabethtown Police Department was dispatched to the M&T Bank at 104 S. Market St. for a robbery that had just occurred. The suspect entered the bank and immediately demanded cash from the teller.

The suspect then assaulted the teller and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. The teller was not seriously injured, and no one else in the bank was injured at all. There were no weapons seen during the robbery.

Elizabethtown Police Department began an investigation assisted by local residents, businesses and other law enforcement agencies. During the course of this investigation, Steffon T. Chambers, 57, of Harrisburg was identified as a suspect.

An arrest warrant was issued for Chambers on Jan. 16. U.S. marshals assisted in searching for and locating him, and he was taken into custody Wednesday.

Chambers was charged with robbery involving bodily injury, a felony of the second degree; robbery involving demanding money from a financial institution, a felony of the second degree; and simple assault, a misdemeanor of the second degree.

Chambers was arraigned by Magisterial District Justice Judge Joshua R. Keller and is in Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail.
