For these local women, tackle football is a rush - and a lot of fun

Sam Vereb had a dream to play football, but the recent Steelton-Highspire High School graduate never was given a chance to suit up in Roller blue and gray. The reason? Her gender.

 

But that didn’t stop her from playing football. 

 

This year, she played her first season with the Keystone Assault, a local women’s tackle football team.

 

The team has been in the Harrisburg area since 2008, and competes in the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL). The Keystone Assault practices at East Pennsboro High School, but for the first time has played its home games at the Lower Dauphin Middle School field in Hummelstown.
