Middletown Council preserves communications director position

Middletown Borough Council defeated an attempt to eliminate the borough’s director of communications position following a citizen’s suggestion that the position was unnecessary.

 

A motion to eliminate the post failed by a 5-4 vote, preserving the $50,000-a-year position, currently held by Chris Courogen.

 

It was during public comment at the council’s meeting Monday, March 3 that resident Rachelle Reid first brought up the idea of nixing the position.

 

“[The borough is] paying him $50,000 a year plus benefits and a car to ride back and forth to work,” said Reid. “Why do we need a communications director when nobody in this area has one? What are we paying him to do? He’s supposed to be the guy that stands out front and explains things to people and that’s the borough manager’s job.
