Aha! ‘Boobies’ to get national exposure

by Garry Lenton Press And Journal Staff : 11/4/2009

It’s official.

Feel Your Boobies Foundation, the Middletown-based breast cancer awareness group, will be one of 10 groups or individuals featured in a national advertising campaign for the insurance company Mutual of Omaha.

The group was selected by online voters who selected Boobies founder Leigh Hurst’s story from 1,000 videos recorded for Mutual’s “Aha Moment” campaign.

Hurst was thrilled with the news, announced Monday.

“I feel so thankful for the support of the people who voted for us to get us into Top 10, but feel even more excited about how many young women we’ll be able to reach that have never heard about Feel Your Boobies before,” she said. “That’s really what our campaign is all about - reminding young women to ‘feel their boobies.’ ”

She thanked readers who went to the campaign’s Web site last week to vote for  her.
Ten “Aha Moments” will be featured in the ad campaign, scheduled to air in March.

For Hurst, whose FYB Foundation urges young women to check themselves for signs of breast cancer, the selection means a wider audience for the group.

Hurst started the campaign three years ago after discovering a cancerous lump on her own breast.

Since then, here Feel Your Boobies car and bumper stickers have become familiar sights across the region.
Hurst’s ‘Aha Moment’ was recorded over the summer at City Island. Online ballots put her in the top 25. Voters were then asked to pick their top 10 from the finalists.

“The survey has confirmed again that these incredible stories from real people truly resonate, and we’re thrilled to recognize them in our 2010 TV spots,” said John Hildenbiddle, senior vice president of brand management and public relations at Mutual of Omaha.
