It’s common knowledge that littering is bad for the environment, but tossing biodegradable apple cores out of the car window won’t hurt any animals, right?
Wrong, according to Mary Barth, a Kunkel Elementary School fourth-grade teacher. Actually, misplaced apple cores can lead majestic hawks to a gruesome demise, Barth said – and she is so passionate about the subject that she wrote and published a children’s book to spread her message.
“I See…A Red-Tailed Hawk” was inspired by a visit Barth made to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary near Reading, where she learned about the unintended consequences of tossing out apple cores.
